Chrome Plating Different Size Parts Simultaneously
Q. I'm not a plater but I evaluate planning and technique for Chrome Plating. My Question is; can you Chrome Plate different size parts at the same time using the same tank and rectifier? Say 2 parts with a total of 37 SQI and another part with 400 SQI using a current density of 2.5 to 3 ASI. Is this possible? Will all parts come up with the required thickness? Could the small parts burn?
A. yes you can chrome plate a variety of items on a single rectifier. There are some rules to follow. Namely conforming anodes work the best and proper sized rack frames, contact bars and other essential fixtures that will handle the necessary DC amps needed. A third and very important consideration would be anode to cathode spacing. I.e., further spacing on smaller parts, closer spacing on larger parts. A final ingredient would be to purchase a decent hand held DC amp /volt clamp around meter to verify the current is being shared properly by each plating set up. With a little ingenuity and practice, you can plate numerous jobs at one time.
