Use of Hexavalent Chromium

Q. Thank you for dicussing with me about information that I heard about the proposed banned of the use of hexavalent chromium in Europe and the USA. You indicated that you send me an email realted to our discussion. Your email will help me close out my file on this issue. Thank You.

A. My response to your question is, I am not aware of plans to stop the use of hexavalent chromium plating in the US or elsewhere. However, there can be significant health, safety and environmental issues regarding the use of hexavalent chrome in industry. Recently, USA OSHA Personnel exposure limit regulations for Cr+6 in the workplace, were tightened and industry is meeting the challenge head on.

There are a number of alternative coatings being developed here and around the world, but at least for the foreseeable future, I believe hexavalent chromium plating is not going away any time soon. "chrome on".
