Removing Chrome from Aluminum Parts
Q. Hi Randy, do you have any ideas for removing chrome from aluminum parts using at home method or should I have it done by a plating company? I have some billet that the chrome has lifted in several areas so I'd like to remove remaing chrome/copper and just polish it.
A. Rob, I know it's tempting to do things yourself to curb cost and save time. I too am a compulsive "do it your self'r", but...this is one of those times when you take it outside. If somehow, you had the knowledge, a safe vented work area, the correct chemicals and equipment, and legitimate way to dispose of the spent solutions you might do it at home, but I'm guessing it's not worth the time or the risk to your health or property.
Take the parts to a local plating shop and talk to them first. You will be glad you made the effort.
Best of luck.
