Cement-Based Treatment of Plating Sludges

Q. I am leading a research project on cement-based treatment of plating sludges. We are trying to conduct a literature review on typical characteristics (composition, generation statistics, etc) as background to this work, and are having trouble finding good sources of information. Are you able to suggest any resources?

A. I had a couple of books/references at one time but I can't put my finger on them at the moment. I know EPA published some well funded studies on this back in the 1980's that I read many moons ago, but the only way to get a hold of them is at the Rice University Library (Houston, Texas) buried in the reference section, or an equally well stocked library somewhere else. I do not think these old publications have been scanned and digitized to electronic form and I am sure they are out of print by now so the US gov printing office would be little help. That same section also has some excellent reference materials published from 1920 to 1960 by the now extinct (or nearly so) US Bureau of Mines on mineral and metals processes and treatments that as I recall covered this topic with some fascinating insight and many now forgotten government funded inventions.

I do have a very nice text on colloid silica chemistry that although it does not really cover this subject specifically, it is an excellent text on silicates chemistry from A-Z. You might look there for some help as well. It was (is?) published by the ACS (American Chemical Society) Bergna is the author/editor and it is #234 in the advances in Chemistry series.

The PQcorp.com can supply you with some of there material on silicate products!!!! In fact one of their in house publications may have a real nice reference section!

Your in luck, while writing this I found it, it came from PQcorp! It is a treatabilty study / manual on solidification/stabilization and pozzolanic chemistry! And it has a huge reference section with EPA publication numbers. Jack Pot! If they can't get you a copy, email me back and I will scan and email the reference section pages of it to you.

When you are done with your study, please send me a copy!
