Q. I have a client frome the oilfields here in Texas. He replaces his chrome rods once a month due to corrosion caused by sand and saltwater. Is there something out there that could help my client? Something that will withstand the dirt and saltwater? I have looked into induction hardened chrome rods. But the companys that sell this product is not to sure this will work. Reason being is that the chrome is still only 0.005" thick.
A. Sand and saltwater are among the most severe conditions to deal with. 1.) Alternative coatings could result in a longer service life, for example., duplex chrome, nickel/chrome, electroless nickel, and HVOF. 2.)The client may also want to consider changing material for certain critical components to corrosion resistant alloys. I would initiate a test program to expose a variety of coated and CRES material specimens to the actual service environment for analysis.
